Dr. Azrudi Mustapha is a nuclear engineer and energy systems specialist with over 20 years of experience spanning utility operations, government policy, and advanced reactor development. His work focuses on the role of nuclear energy in enabling reliable, low-carbon power systems as part of the global energy transition.
He previously spent over a decade with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), where he was involved in power generation technologies, distribution planning, and power system analysis. He later served with Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy, contributing to electricity market design and reform of the Malaysia Electricity Supply Industry (MESI), and subsequently supported national-level feasibility studies on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Dr. Azrudi holds a PhD in Nuclear Thermal-Hydraulics from Imperial College London under the Yayasan Khazanah Nasional scholarship, a Master’s degree in Nuclear Science & Technology from University of Manchester (Chevening Scholar), and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University.
He is currently the founder of Clean Energy Xpeditions (CENERGY), where he leads the development of a next-generation Small Modular Reactor concept based on low-pressure, natural-circulation principles, with a focus on simplified architecture and enhanced passive safety. His work is supported by an international patent portfolio covering multiple jurisdictions.
With experience across utility operations, policy, and reactor design, Dr. Azrudi brings a systems-level perspective to the integration of nuclear energy into modern power grids. He is a frequent speaker on clean energy, sustainability, and nuclear technology, and has been featured in Malaysian media including Bernama, FMT, TMR & The Star as well as on broadcast media such as BFM 89.9 radio.
